How Virtual Therapy/Telehealth Works
At ReCentered Healing, I offer virtual therapy services that can be accessed from the comfort of your own home.
With 13 years of experience in providing virtual therapy, I can assure you that you will still receive the same high-quality mental health services as you would in a traditional therapy setting, but with added convenience and accessibility.
I use HIPAA-compliant video conferencing software to ensure that you can access therapy while maintaining anonymity, privacy, and security in the comfort of your own surroundings, without the worries or stress of meeting in person.
Virtual therapy is also an excellent option for individuals who live in remote or rural areas where finding mental health services nearby may be a challenge or who may have mobility constraints. It is also a great choice for people who prefer to be in the comfort of their own homes or do not want to deal with parking!

Lighting
Try to position light sources in front of you rather than behind you. Ideally, you should face a window rather than sitting in front of one. If needed, you can set up additional light sources, such as a lamp, in front of you.
Audio
Most computer audio sources are adequate for our needs. However in some cases, you or I may need to wear some sort of headphones and/or a use a separate microphone when we talk. This reduces any echo in the audio and increases your sense of privacy.
Camera
Position your device so I can see you clearly, placing your camera (aka green light) at eye level. The more I can see of you, the better! Also, I recommend hiding the self-view so that you aren’t looking into a mirror for the duration of the appointment.
Common Questions about Telehealth
-
Absolutely! There is strong evidence showing that this method is as effective as in-person therapy.
-
The biggest advantage of telehealth therapy is convenience - you can complete your sessions from anywhere with a good internet connection and privacy. It also permits people who live far from providers to reduce travel time and stress. Some people also feel more comfortable opening up to therapists when they are in their comfort zone.
Disadvantages can include difficulty establishing privacy when living in a home with others, difficulty with distractions, and the potential for technological interruptions. However, each of these potential disadvantages can be mitigated by discussing your concerns with an experienced telehealth provider.

Yes! Studies have shown that EMDR is effectively delivered virtually and while not specifically studied, somatic work can also be delivered online. There are a variety of ways to self-administer bilateral stimulation (BLS) as part of EMDR and also there are several techniques we can use for somatic interventions.

Having a larger screen can be helpful for therapy engagement, however it is not necessary. Virtual appointments may be completed with use of a smart phone as long as it can be placed on a stable surface. I have completed many sessions with clients who complete the appointment by phone from their cars (parked, of course)!
